Meet Dr. Wilcoxon

meet-dr-wilcoxonWorking in this wonderful field for over 20 years, I’ve truly appreciated the opportunity to interact with so many people on a daily basis. I try my best to make each interaction a positive one, recognizing that each of us has the opportunity to contribute in a unique way to all of the lives we touch.

I love the detail-oriented nature of orthodontics. It is truly satisfying to provide a service with such visible results, and it’s a joy to make a positive difference in someone’s life. I am so grateful for the support of my fantastic team to provide our best for each patient.

Education and Background

I was born and raised in the small town of Marshall, Missouri, where my father practiced general dentistry for over 50 years. I attended the University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou-Rah! Go Tigers!), where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry in 1975. The following four years were spent at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry, where I completed my D.D.S. in 1979. I continued my studies at UMKC, receiving an M.A. in Education, an M.S. in Oral Biology, and my Certificate in Graduate Orthodontics. While at UMKC, I was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. I had the privilege of serving on the faculty of the UMKC School of Dentistry as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry for five years. In 2005 I was honored by the UMKC School of Dentistry as a recipient of a Rinehart Medallion Award for professional excellence and service.

Staying current on the latest techniques and procedures is extremely important in order to provide the best care for my patients. I attend 40 to 50 hours of continuing education courses each year, in addition to participating in on-line training. Much of this continuing education is provided thorough my participation in numerous professional organizations:

Professional Achievements

It has always been my goal to strive for excellence in my practice. It is most rewarding to have those efforts recognized by my peers. My practice has been recognized in the Best Dentists in America, the Guide to America’s Top Dentists, Kansas City Magazine’s “Top Dentists”, and the Kansas City Star’s “Super Dentists” for many years. I was also pleased to have a clinical research paper published in the orthodontic profession’s national journal, the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Outside the Office

My wonderful wife and I have been married for over 30 years. Our two “little girls” have all-too-quickly become lovely young women. However, we do still get to dote on our two loveable bichons who seem to enjoy parental attention! When I’m not in the office, I can usually be found spending time with my family and friends, reading, traveling, cycling, and enjoying music. I am a member of the Johnson County Chorus and the Johnson County Choraliers.

I participate in many of the programs and outreach ministries of Christ Community Church, where my wife and I have been members for over twenty years. I enjoy being able to give back to the community professionally as a participant in the “Smiles Change Lives” and “Kansas Donated Orthodontic Services” programs by providing pro-bono orthodontic care for those in need. I have also had the unique experience of helping establish a donated-services orthodontic clinic in Moscow, Russia.
